I like two things in this photo. The first one is the feeling of desolation and loneliness given by the trees without foliage (despite the pines blending in the background), as if we are warned that we are entering an area of desperation, where time and growth were (voluntarily?) halted.

The second point is more technical. the smoothness of the grain and the continuous graduation in the tones of grey (from top to bottom, light to darkness) as well as the depth of the scene (way the trees blend with the fog) are nothing but amazing.
